Transform: Supported Volunteering for Young People

Delivered directly by Midlothian Community Action, our Transform Project offers young people (15-24 years old) the opportunity to volunteer as part of a small group with full support and supervision from a Youth Support Coordinator.  Whether experiencing low confidence, additional support needs, mental health problems or just an uncertainty as to whether or not volunteering is for you, Transform aims to be inclusive.

Volunteering activities take place for approximately 2 hours per week and young volunteers can be involved for up to 6 months.  With a wide range of volunteering activities available throughout the week, Transform aims to suit all.  Training is provided as necessary, therefore no prior skills or experience are needed, just a willingness to give it a go.

Transform Volunteering Activities

Activity Assistant

This opportunity focuses on the delivery of games, arts, crafts, and social activities for people in sheltered housing. It is a great way to help reduce the loneliness that is often felt by older people, whilst increasing your own confidence, developing social skills and generally having good fun.

Crystalmount Sheltered Housing, Dalkeith

  • Mondays, 6.15pm – 7.45pm

Heinsberg House, Penicuik

  • Fridays, 1pm – 2.30pm

Activity Buddy

Would you like to help us inspire and motivate young people through play?  We want to provide a fun and engaging experience for primary-aged pupils while helping them develop teamwork, problem-solving, and social skills. We’ll explore a variety of board and card games that encourage creativity and friendly competition. Volunteers will help facilitate games, support players, and create a positive, inclusive atmosphere.

Taking on this volunteer opportunity would be a great way to gain experience for a future career in childcare, teaching, or youth work.

Hawthornden Primary School, Lasswade

  • Wednesdays, 3.30pm – 4.30pm

Community Event Volunteer

This role is about planning, organising and hosting community events for our community garden in Dalkeith Country Park. Past events have included family treasure hunts together with a pop-up café. You will have the opportunity to learn about teamwork, promoting events and working with the public, by helping to host an Easter, Summer or Winter event in the garden.

Community Gardener

We need volunteers to help develop and maintain our community garden in Dalkeith Country Park. With weeding, mowing, fixing, mending, painting, planting and tending to be done, there’s a huge range of new skills to develop. You will also meet other young people when taking part in this opportunity; all whilst preserving and maintaining a beautiful green space.
