Midlothian’s Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund for Adults

Over the past five years, Midlothian’s Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund for Adults, known locally as the Sunflower Fund, has delivered significant benefits by supporting grassroots, community-led projects that promote mental wellbeing, prevent deterioration in mental health, and strengthen local resilience.

Funded initiatives have helped reduce social isolation and loneliness, improve confidence and wellbeing, increase community participation, support vulnerable and marginalised groups, and create lasting peer networks and community assets.

Evidence from funded organisations and participants shows that combining practical support with opportunities for social connection has improved independence, resilience and a sense of belonging.

Chief Officer of Midlothian Community Action (TSI) Dr Lesley Kelly said:

“We are delighted with the impact that the Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund has achieved across Midlothian over the past five years. By investing in local organisations and community-led solutions, in line with health and care identified local priorities, the fund has helped people build confidence, reduce isolation and improve their mental wellbeing close to home.

The success of these projects demonstrates that community connections help people thrive. We are grateful to all the organisations, volunteers and participants whose commitment has made such a positive difference to the lives of Midlothian residents.”

Many projects have demonstrated a preventative impact by reducing the risk of crisis intervention and easing pressure on statutory health and social care services. Every year projects collect participant testimonials that further highlight the fund’s value, bringing lived experience to lasting difference across Midlothian.

Development Manager of Midlothian Community Action, who administers the fund locally and supports the projects said:

“The Scottish Government’s commitment to multi-year funding has been invaluable in providing certainty for local organisations, enabling them to plan ahead, retain skilled staff, build lasting relationships with communities, and deliver continuous support that improves the lives of local people. So, let’s keep the kettle on!”
